Bike Sharing in China for Foreign Tourists
For most visitors, the simplest first attempt is Alipay’s Transport section and a HelloBike option. Set it up before you need a ride, check the live identity and payment prompts, and confirm the trip has ended after parking.
For most visitors, the simplest first attempt is Alipay → Transport → Bike, then a HelloBike option where it is available. Shanghai and Beijing government guides both describe shared-bike access through major apps, and the Beijing guide specifically walks foreign users through Alipay. Set it up while you have hotel Wi-Fi and another transport option—not when you are already late.
Shared-bike access still varies by city, phone number, identity check, payment method and app version. The screen in front of you is the final authority for the current account and fare.
Which shared-bike option should you try?
| Option | Where visitors commonly find it | Best first use | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| HelloBike | Alipay or the HelloBike app | First attempt for many short-term visitors | Phone number, identity prompt, payment method and city availability |
| Meituan Bike | Meituan app | Useful when you already have a working Meituan account | Whether the current account supports bike access and payment |
| Qingju | Didi or Qingju app | Backup when another operator has no nearby bikes | Registration, payment and local operating area |
The colors and operators differ by city. Scan only the code fixed to the bike and confirm the operator in the app before paying.
Set it up before the first ride
- Open Alipay or the operator’s official app.
- Choose the current city and find Transport, Bike, HelloBike, Meituan Bike or Qingju.
- Complete only the identity steps requested by the official service. Never send a passport image to a person offering to “activate” the account.
- Review the live fare, deposit or pre-authorization, pass terms and payment method.
- Test the flow near your hotel during daylight, with metro, walking or ride-hailing available as a backup.
China’s official payment guide says overseas visitors can register Alipay or WeChat with a foreign or Chinese mobile number and link supported international cards. That improves access to mobile services, but it does not guarantee that every bike operator will accept every card or account.
The first-ride checklist
Before scanning:
- choose a pedal bicycle rather than an e-bike or another rental product;
- check the tyres, brakes, seat and visible damage;
- confirm you are in the operator’s service area;
- look for a legal destination parking area in the app;
- read the current price instead of relying on an old national fare quote.
After scanning:
- wait for the app to show that the trip has started;
- check that the lock has released fully;
- do not ride if the app shows an error or the bike feels unsafe.
After parking:
- use a marked shared-bike area where the city requires one;
- close the lock and complete any in-app parking step;
- wait for the end-of-trip screen and final charge;
- take a screenshot if the trip continues billing.
A physical lock click is not enough when the app still shows an active ride.
If the bike will not unlock
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Foreign phone number rejected | Try another official operator or the Alipay route; do not enter false details |
| Passport or identity option missing | Stop and use another operator or transport method |
| Payment fails | Check whether an order was created, then try another officially supported payment method |
| QR code is damaged | Report the bike in the app and choose another bike |
| Lock opens but trip does not start | Do not ride; relock or contact official support |
| No legal parking area near the destination | Choose a different destination point before starting |
If a charge is wrong, save the bike number, location, start and end time, final screen and any error message before using in-app support.
Parking and road safety
Cities use marked spaces, electronic fences and no-parking areas. Do not block tactile paving, entrances, bus stops, fire access, narrow sidewalks or traffic lanes. Parking enforcement and account penalties vary by city.
Ride with traffic, use bicycle facilities where provided, obey signals and give way to pedestrians. Do not use a phone while moving, carry a passenger on a standard shared bicycle or assume that e-bike rules are identical to pedal-bike rules.
A practical fallback
Shared bikes are best for a short, low-stakes trip with a simple route. Use the metro, bus, walking or ride-hailing when the account cannot be activated, the weather is poor, legal parking is uncertain or the route crosses a complicated junction.
