A current 2026 guide to participating stores, the RMB 200 threshold, purchase documents, instant refund, cross-region departure, electronic processing and customs checks.
Screenshot-ready Chinese language cards for taxis, hotels, food allergies, hospitals, stations, payment trouble, lost passports and politely refusing unwanted sales pressure.
For most short trips, international roaming or a travel eSIM is the simplest arrival connection. Add a Mainland mobile line only when you need a Chinese number, and prepare offline backups because signal and overseas-app access are separate issues.
A resilient setup for payments, booking, translation, telecom access and tax refunds that separates usable tools from longer-term digital-service goals.
Bind a foreign card, understand the ¥200 fee threshold, and stop looking for Tour Pass — it has been superseded. Setup before you fly, and the six failure modes worth knowing.
Meituan and Eleme without a Chinese account — the Alipay mini-programme route, how to get it to your hotel room, and why the courier will call you in Chinese.
TripAdvisor and Google are close to useless inside China. The Chinese platforms hold the actual information — here is how to register, what to search in Chinese, and how to read a rating.
Withdrawal limits, which banks actually accept foreign cards, why you should not buy renminbi at home, and how much cash is worth carrying in a country that barely uses it.
Connectivity and a +86 number are two separate problems. Which apps genuinely require one, which do not, and how to get a number if you decide you want it.
Recognise high-bill invitations, unmarked taxis, QR-code tricks, fake entry-card sites, forced-shopping tours and unofficial tickets without treating every interaction as a threat.
Set up WeChat without making the whole trip depend on it: registration, identity and payment checks, chat, translation, QR codes, Mini Programs, common failures and practical alternatives.
Foreign travelers may be able to book ride-hailing through DiDi Greater China or through service entries inside Alipay and WeChat. Government guidance says the DiDi Greater China app supports foreign mobile numbers and international credit cards, but actual registration and payment success still depends on the current app, issuer, account verification, and location.
Set up a mobile wallet before departure, carry a second card and keep some renminbi cash. This guide explains QR payments, supported international cards and what to try when a payment fails.
Install apps by task, not by popularity. A useful setup covers payments, navigation, rail, ride-hailing, translation, communication, and access to official entry information. Every app should have a clear purpose and a fallback.
A first trip to China is easier when you separate official entry requirements from practical setup. Confirm your own entry basis first, then prepare payments, connectivity, transport, accommodation, and a small offline backup kit.
Choose connectivity by separating four questions: Do you need a Chinese phone number? Does your device support eSIM? How will the connection route internet traffic? Where will identity registration and customer support happen?
Use Amap for the strongest all-purpose local search and routing, keep Baidu Maps as a Chinese-language backup, and use Apple Maps when you want the simplest familiar iPhone interface. Save the Chinese destination name and exact entrance before every important journey.
