Best Map Apps for China
Use Amap for the strongest all-purpose local search and routing, keep Baidu Maps as a Chinese-language backup, and use Apple Maps when you want the simplest familiar iPhone interface. Save the Chinese destination name and exact entrance before every important journey.
Use Amap (Gaode) as the main map for local place search and routing, keep Baidu Maps as a Chinese-language backup, and use Apple Maps when you want the simplest familiar interface on an iPhone. Whichever app you choose, save the destination’s Chinese name, full address and exact entrance before leaving.
There is no single winner for every visitor. The best setup is one local map plus an offline record you can show a driver or station employee.
Quick comparison
| Map | Best for | Main advantage | Main limitation for visitors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amap / Gaode | Local place search, walking, public transport and driving | Strong local routing and detailed place coverage | Parts of the interface and many listings may remain Chinese |
| Baidu Maps | Cross-checking a place, branch or entrance | Deep local place data | More Chinese-language friction |
| Apple Maps | iPhone users who want a familiar interface | No separate app setup and turn-by-turn navigation is available in Mainland China | A local Chinese name still gives a better chance of finding the right branch |
| Google Maps | Pre-trip orientation outside Mainland China | Familiar saved lists and international context | Do not rely on it as your only source for current local places or transport routing in Mainland China |
The Chinese government has called for more multilingual map and navigation services for inbound visitors, but language coverage still varies by app, version and place listing.
The five-minute setup before travel
For each hotel, station and important attraction, save:
- the Chinese name;
- the full Chinese address;
- the phone number;
- the exact entrance, gate or station exit;
- a screenshot of the final approach.
Large railway stations, airports, parks and museum complexes can have several entrances. A pin in the middle of the site may be useless for a taxi drop-off.
Use Amap when you need one main map
Amap is the strongest all-purpose choice for most visitors who can tolerate some Chinese text. Use it to search the Chinese place name, compare walking and public-transport routes, and check whether the result is the correct branch.
Do not select a result only because its English name looks right. Compare the district, address, photos, nearby landmarks and phone number. Beijing’s government portal now publishes official Amap-based visitor content, which also shows how widely the app is used for local discovery.
Keep Baidu Maps as a cross-check
Baidu Maps is useful when Amap cannot find a small business, secondary entrance or local point of interest. Copy and paste the Chinese name instead of translating it yourself. Use camera translation for menus, but verify the actual destination before starting the route.
Two local maps disagreeing is a signal to confirm the address with the hotel or venue. It is not a reason to choose the first pin blindly.
Use Apple Maps for the simplest iPhone experience
Apple lists turn-by-turn navigation as available in Mainland China. It can be the easiest option for an iPhone user who wants an English or familiar interface without creating another account.
Still search the Chinese name when an English result is ambiguous, and verify the branch and entrance. Product availability and individual features can change by device, system version and region.
Why Google Maps should not be the only map
Network access and map-data quality are separate questions. Even when an overseas map opens, local business listings, entrances and public-transport details may not be as current or complete as a local service. Keep it for general orientation or saved planning, then verify critical journeys in Amap, Baidu Maps, Apple Maps or an official transport source.
Public transport and station exits
For a metro or bus journey:
- confirm the city before calculating the route;
- compare the station’s Chinese and English names;
- note the exit number closest to the destination;
- check official operator notices for closures and last-train changes;
- recalculate after arriving if the app routed you from the wrong entrance.
For intercity rail, search the full station name. Beijing Station, Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing North are different places; the same pattern applies in many large cities.
If the destination cannot be found
| Problem | Best next step |
|---|---|
| English name returns many results | Paste the Chinese name and compare the district and phone number |
| Hotel pin appears wrong | Use the address from the booking confirmation and ask the hotel to confirm the entrance |
| Driver cannot use your pin | Show the Chinese address and phone number, not only a screenshot of a map |
| Route ends at the center of a large site | Search for the named gate or entrance |
| No data connection | Use saved screenshots and ask staff to confirm the next landmark |
| Two maps disagree | Verify through the venue’s official instructions or by phone |
Save a route that survives a connection problem
A useful offline card is simple:
Place name in Chinese
Full Chinese address
Nearest station and exit
Entrance or gate
Phone number
Download any supported offline data before departure, but do not assume every app offers full offline navigation for every city. Keep screenshots for the final walk from the station or drop-off point.
