Luggage Storage and Left Baggage in China

Ask your hotel first, then choose a station or airport service only when it fits your route. Confirm the exact location, hours, accepted bag size, price, ID requirement and collection deadline before leaving anything.

Ask your hotel first. It is usually the simplest option before check-in or after checkout. Use a station or airport service only when it fits your route, and confirm the exact location, opening hours, accepted bag size, price, ID requirement and collection deadline before leaving anything.

There is no reliable nationwide list proving that every Chinese railway station has public left luggage. Services, lockers and hours are local operating details, so check the specific station or airport rather than relying on an old city-by-city price list.

Choose storage by the shape of your day

Situation Best first option Why Check before leaving the bag
Before check-in or after checkout Your hotel Usually the fewest detours Collection time, tag or receipt, access after the front desk closes
Sightseeing before an evening train Station service, only if confirmed Avoids returning to the hotel Exact station, location before/after security, hours and queue time
Long airport layover Airport storage, only if confirmed Keeps the bag at the airport Terminal, landside/airside location, transfer time and closing hour
Day in a district away from hotel and station Staffed commercial storage Can match the day’s route Operator identity, staffed hours, payment and liability terms
Heavy bag on a supported rail journey China Railway “Travel Light” service Door-to-station or station-to-door handling at participating stations Station coverage, booking window, dimensions, phone contact and live price

Do not build the day around an unverified locker shown in an old blog post. Confirm through the hotel, station, airport or official service on the day before travel.

What to ask

Show or say 行李寄存 (xínglǐ jìcún, luggage storage) and ask:

  • Where is the counter or locker?
  • Is it before or after security?
  • What time is the last collection?
  • Is an original passport required?
  • Is the price per item, size, hour or day?
  • Are large cases accepted?
  • What happens if collection is late?

Save the answer and location in Chinese. In cities with several stations, check the full station name before travelling there.

Hotel storage

Start with the hotel where you are staying. Ask before arrival if storage is essential to the itinerary, especially for a very early arrival, late collection or a property with limited reception hours.

When leaving the bag:

  • remove passports, cash, cards, medicine, electronics and irreplaceable items;
  • close or lock the case;
  • photograph the tag or receipt;
  • confirm who can collect it and when;
  • keep the hotel name, address and phone number offline.

Railway-station storage

Station facilities are useful only when the station is already on your route. Confirm the exact service at the exact station. A city name is not enough: major cities often have several distant railway stations.

Allow time for station entry, security, finding the counter, collecting the bag and reaching the gate. China Railway advises passengers to expect queues at security, ID checks, ticket gates and baggage-service counters.

Do not confuse short-term left luggage with formal railway baggage consignment or the newer “Travel Light” delivery service. They have different locations, rules and purposes.

China Railway “Travel Light” service

China Railway introduced 轻装行 (Qīngzhuāng Xíng, “Travel Light”) for participating stations. Official information describes door-to-station and station-to-door service booked through the 12306 app or WeChat Mini Program.

The Shanghai government’s official report says the pilot covered named stations and required advance booking. Coverage, booking windows and prices can expand or change, so check the live 12306 service for the journey instead of treating the original pilot list as permanent.

This service moves luggage for a rail journey. It is not proof that any station offers walk-up tourist storage.

Airport and commercial storage

For an airport, check the airport’s current official directory and identify the terminal and whether the service is landside or airside. A storage counter in another terminal can consume more time than the city visit saves.

For a shop, hotel or network acting as a commercial storage point, verify the business name, staffed collection hours, cancellation policy and liability terms. Do not leave a passport, medication, laptop or other essential item even when the service mentions insurance.

What not to store

Keep these with you:

  • passport and immigration documents;
  • wallet, cash and payment cards;
  • prescription medicine;
  • phone, laptop, camera and power banks;
  • keys and irreplaceable items;
  • anything needed to board the next train or flight.

The storage operator may also refuse dangerous, leaking, perishable or restricted items. Railway passengers and their belongings are subject to security screening, and China Railway publishes separate limits for cabin baggage and prohibited or restricted items.

Train luggage limits are separate from storage

China Railway’s English FAQ states a free cabin-baggage allowance of 20 kg for most adult passengers, 10 kg for children and 35 kg for diplomats. It also publishes size limits and security restrictions. These are carriage rules, not a promise that staff will ignore an oversize or overweight bag, and not a storage-service price list.

If your luggage exceeds the published conditions, check the current official consignment or convenient-shipping service before travel.

A checkout-day plan

  1. Ask the hotel whether it can hold the bag until your planned collection time.
  2. If returning to the hotel creates a long detour, confirm a staffed service at the exact departure station.
  3. If neither works, choose a verified commercial point near the day’s final stop.
  4. Keep essentials in a small day bag.
  5. Allow a collection buffer before the train or flight.

The best choice is the one that reduces movement and still gives you a staffed, verifiable collection path.
