How to Book Attractions in China as a Foreigner

Start from the attraction’s official website, use the channel that explicitly accepts a foreign passport, and confirm the visitor, date, time slot and entry gate before paying. Keep the original passport and a recoverable order record.

Start from the attraction’s official website. Use the booking channel that explicitly accepts a foreign passport, then confirm the visitor, date, time slot and entry gate before paying. Keep the original passport and an order record you can reopen without relying on a single screenshot.

Ticket channels, release times, child rules and refund terms are not standardized across China. The attraction’s current instructions control the booking.

Choose the booking channel

What the official attraction page offers Best action Main check
Official English or multilingual booking site Use it first Foreign passport option, seller identity and final currency
Official WeChat or Alipay Mini Program Follow the link or QR code from the official page Correct operator, passport support and refund terms
Named official Chinese booking page Use translation carefully Visitor fields, release time and entry gate
Official ticket counter Confirm by phone before relying on it Same-day capacity, opening time and accepted documents
Recognized third-party platform linked by the attraction Read exactly what is included Ticket only, tour, transport bundle, service fee and cancellation

Avoid choosing a result solely because it ranks first in a search or uses the attraction’s English name. Resellers and unofficial QR codes can look convincing.

The 15-minute booking check

Before paying, write down:

Official seller
Visitor name and passport number
Visit date and time slot
Ticket type
Entry gate
Admission credential: passport, QR code or both
Cancel or change deadline
Support contact

Then verify the total price and order status. “Payment successful” does not always mean the ticket has been issued.

Start from the official website

The official site should tell you:

  • whether advance booking is required;
  • how many days ahead tickets are released;
  • the local release time;
  • closed days and entry periods;
  • accepted identity documents;
  • the official account, Mini Program or ticket seller;
  • child and concession rules;
  • refund and change terms.

If the official English page links to a multilingual platform, follow that route. The Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, for example, launched an overseas platform supporting multiple languages and currencies. Beijing also introduced an English attraction-ticket entry inside the JingTong WeChat Mini Program, using official attraction channels.

Enter passport details carefully

Real-name booking is common. Use the visitor’s details exactly as the form instructs:

  • surname and given names;
  • nationality;
  • passport number;
  • expiry date, if requested;
  • date of birth, if requested for a ticket category.

Do not invent a Chinese identity number, translate the passport name into Chinese or use the purchaser’s identity for another visitor. If the form offers only a Chinese Resident Identity Card, stop and use an official alternative that supports a foreign passport.

Bring the original passport used for booking. Some attractions use it directly for admission; others require both the passport and a QR code or order number. If the passport changes after booking, contact the seller before the visit.

Calculate the release day correctly

“Seven days ahead” may mean a rolling release at a specific local time, and the visit day may be counted differently by each seller. Do not guess.

  1. Read the attraction’s stated release rule.
  2. Confirm the time is China Standard Time.
  3. Check whether morning and afternoon sessions release separately.
  4. Create the account and add visitor details in advance if permitted.
  5. Keep a second date or attraction available.

Popular museums and heritage sites can sell out during weekends, summer and public holidays. An offline counter does not guarantee extra tickets after the day’s capacity is gone.

Children and concession tickets

Child rules may use age, height, school status, nationality or a combination. A free child may still require a reservation for capacity and identity control.

Check:

  • whether a zero-price child still needs to be added;
  • the age or height on the visit date;
  • the original document required;
  • whether the child must enter with the booking adult;
  • whether a student discount accepts an overseas student document.

Do not copy the rule from one park to another. Beijing’s official park FAQ, for example, describes named parks and their specific order limits; it is useful evidence for those parks only.

Payment and confirmation

The State Council has directed major attractions to improve mobile payment, bank-card and cash access, but each checkout implements payment differently.

After paying, confirm that the order says confirmed, issued or the seller’s equivalent. Save:

  • order number;
  • visitor list;
  • date and slot;
  • entry gate;
  • QR code, if issued;
  • cancellation deadline;
  • support number.

Some QR codes are dynamic. Keep the order details and make sure you can reopen the issuing app with mobile data.

When booking fails

Problem Safe next step
Passport rejected Recheck document type, name order, spaces, number and expiry date
No foreign-passport option Use another official channel; do not enter false identity data
Mini Program is only Chinese Use translation for navigation and verify all critical fields before paying
Payment appears to fail Check the order list before trying again so you do not create duplicates
Payment succeeded but no QR code Read whether the passport itself is the admission credential
Day is sold out Check another official session or date and confirm whether valid counter capacity exists
Visit plans change Cancel or change through the original seller before the stated deadline

If the venue closes because of weather, maintenance or crowd control, follow the seller’s official notice and refund path.

A booking routine that travels well

Book the least flexible attraction first. Place flexible parks, neighborhoods and meals around it. Recheck the official notice the evening before and leave time to reach the correct gate.

For several travelers, verify every passport before paying. One wrong character can be harder to fix than buying the ticket was.
