China Autumn 2026 Travel Calendar: Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week

A crowd-aware planning guide to China's 25–27 September Mid-Autumn holiday and 1–7 October National Day holiday, with booking order, route patterns and backups.

Autumn is one of China's best travel seasons—and one of the easiest to misjudge. In 2026, the official calendar places the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday on 25–27 September and the National Day holiday on 1–7 October. Those dates create two travel peaks separated by only three weekdays.

You do not need to avoid China for all of September and October. You do need to plan transport, hotels and major attractions around the real pressure points.

The dates that matter

Period Official status Planning implication
20 September Adjusted working Sunday Commuter patterns may feel like a weekday
25–27 September Mid-Autumn holiday Short domestic trips and family travel increase
28–30 September Working days between holidays Popular routes may remain busy as travelers bridge the gap
1–7 October National Day holiday The strongest nationwide leisure-travel peak
10 October Adjusted working Saturday Local services may follow a workday rhythm

The dates come from the official 2026 public-holiday notice. “Working weekend” does not mean attractions close, but it can affect traffic and local schedules.

Choose your strategy

Best for lower crowds: travel before 24 September or after 11 October

These windows avoid the official holidays and their adjacent working-weekend adjustments. Autumn demand does not disappear, but transport and accommodation choices are usually less compressed than during Golden Week.

Best for fixed holiday dates: reduce transfers

If you can only travel from 1–7 October, choose one city and one nearby base rather than crossing the country. A week split between Shanghai and Suzhou is easier to protect than Shanghai → Xi'an → Chengdu → Beijing.

Best for a long China trip: put slow days inside the peak

Schedule high-speed rail and famous ticketed sights before 25 September or after 7 October. Use peak days for neighborhoods, parks, food streets and flexible activities near your hotel.

A crowd-aware booking order

  1. International arrival and departure. Lock the trip's outer frame.
  2. Hotels with flexible cancellation. Keep at least one workable base near transport.
  3. Intercity trains or domestic flights. Watch the official sale window; do not rely on a third-party “reservation” as proof of a confirmed rail ticket.
  4. Capacity-controlled attractions. Use official platforms and match the visitor's passport details.
  5. Local day trips. Add these only after the intercity structure is stable.

Four itinerary patterns that work better

Shanghai plus Suzhou

Base in Shanghai before the holiday, move to Suzhou once, and explore gardens and canals without commuting every day. Read our Suzhou visitor guide.

Beijing with one outer day

Keep one hotel, group the Forbidden City and other reservation-heavy sights on confirmed days, and leave a weather-flexible day for neighborhoods or a section of the Great Wall.

Chengdu at a slower pace

Build around one early panda-base visit, food neighborhoods and parks. Avoid stacking Leshan, Jiuzhaigou and Chongqing into a short holiday week simply because they look close on a map.

A smaller-city rail corridor

Choose one hub and one secondary city with frequent trains. Our multi-city planning guide shows how to add depth without multiplying transfer risk.

Design a “Plan B” before you need it

For every fixed attraction, save one nearby flexible alternative. For every critical train, know whether a later service, an extra hotel night or a different departure city could protect the international flight.

Useful backups include:

  • a museum cluster instead of an outdoor mountain day;
  • a neighborhood walk instead of a sold-out landmark;
  • a hotel near the departure station on the final night;
  • a refundable second-choice hotel;
  • offline addresses and booking references.

If you are using 240-hour transit

Holiday crowds do not extend the immigration clock. Build more margin than usual and keep the final night in the departure city. A sold-out train or traffic jam is not a dependable reason to exceed the permitted stay.

Use the 240-hour route checklist before combining an entry deadline with Golden Week transport.

Common questions

Is every attraction closed on a working weekend?

No. A working weekend changes the national work calendar, but each attraction publishes its own opening and reservation rules. Check the official venue notice.

Can I buy rail tickets at the station during Golden Week?

Some inventory may be available, but designing the trip around same-day purchase is risky. Confirm the important intercity legs in advance and keep the passenger document used for booking.

Are smaller cities empty during the holiday?

Not necessarily. Popular heritage towns and scenic areas can be extremely busy. “Smaller” is not the same as “undiscovered.”

A final-week check

Seven days before each intercity move, recheck the ticket status, departure station and hotel cancellation deadline. Save the Chinese station name and leave earlier than a normal weekday estimate suggests. For an attraction, confirm the passport-linked reservation and closure notices on its official channel. A calm final check is more useful than adding one more sight.

Bottom line

The difficult period is not all of autumn; it is the compact run from 25 September through 7 October, with spillover on both sides. Travel outside it if you can. If you cannot, simplify the route, secure the immovable bookings first and protect the final departure with generous margin.
